Shenzhen’s story goes beyond the skyline.

Imagine arriving in Shenzhen for its technology, then discovering that the most useful first question is about its people. What shaped the city before the towers—and what might shape it next?

Two museums offer different ways into that story.

Culture: Shenzhen Museum, Futian

For local history, choose Shenzhen Museum’s Jintian Road venue, officially the History and Folk Culture division, at Civic Center, Area A. Its exhibitions explore ancient and modern Shenzhen, folk culture, and reform and opening-up. Museum introduction.

The venue has around 10,000 square metres of exhibition space. Give yourself time to follow one story rather than race through every room: everyday life, local traditions, or the changes that built today’s city. Museum introduction.

The museum’s visitor guidance lists free general admission without advance reservation. Check any special exhibition’s separate conditions before visiting. Official visitor guidance.

Science: Shenzhen Science and Technology Museum, Guangming

Opened in May 2025, this museum explores communications, smart industries, everyday technology and space. Guangming’s government describes interactive exhibits and hands-on activities for children, families and the wider public. Guangming government overview.

Our suggestion: pick one topic and spend time investigating how it works. You will get more from testing an idea than collecting a photograph of every display.

Plan for the visit you want

These are separate destinations in Futian and Guangming. Choose one as the anchor of your day, or allow substantial travel time if visiting both. Avoid a rushed two-museum checklist.

Confirm current opening hours, science-museum tickets and activity bookings through official channels. Holiday schedules can differ. English interpretation and guided assistance also need checking; hands-on does not automatically mean language-free.
