Your next Shenzhen crossing has a date.

Imagine planning a Shenzhen dinner and spending more time comparing border routes than choosing a restaurant. A new crossing arrangement gives you another way to organise that journey. The useful question is how it fits your plans.

Hong Kong and Shenzhen have confirmed that the redeveloped Huanggang Port opens at 6:30am on Monday, 12 October 2026. It will provide 24-hour clearance for passengers and passenger vehicles. At the same time, passenger clearance between Shenzhen’s temporary Huanggang building and Hong Kong’s Lok Ma Chau Control Point will be suspended. Official joint opening notice.

This updates our 8 October City Notes, which correctly treated the opening date as an expectation reported by SCMP. The date is now confirmed in the authorities’ joint notice. SCMP, 9 October.

What changes for travellers?

The new facility brings Hong Kong and mainland immigration procedures into the same building. It has 134 collaborative inspection automated channels. Eligible, enrolled passengers can complete both regions’ immigration procedures through these channels with one queue and one document presentation.

Check your eligibility before relying on that option. Eligible Hong Kong adults can enrol through the HK e-Channel app using iAM Smart; requirements depend on your documents and existing registrations. Manual counters remain available. You must still carry valid travel documents. Official eligibility and enrolment guidance.

Plan the journey home too.

A 24-hour crossing does not make every connecting service an overnight service. Check your operator’s stops, timetable and return route. The Transport Department advises allowing extra time during the initial opening period and considering other crossings where they suit your journey. Official transport guidance.

Then choose what makes the visit worthwhile: a meal, a museum or a shopping destination. Give that experience time, rather than filling every gap.
