Your layover is shorter than it looks.
Can you leave Shenzhen airport during a layover? Possibly, if you have permission to enter China and enough usable time to return for your next flight. The gap between scheduled flights is not your sightseeing window. There is no single minimum layover that works for every traveller.
Imagine landing in Shenzhen with an afternoon before an evening flight. A meal and a little shopping sound manageable. But arrival formalities, luggage and the return journey all need space in the plan. Start with those commitments, then choose your city stop.
1. Establish whether you can enter
Check the rule that applies to your passport and complete itinerary: a valid visa, an applicable visa exemption or an eligible transit arrangement. Under China's 24-hour visa-free transit policy, remaining in the airport's restricted area is different from leaving it; a temporary entry permit is required to leave that area. The separate 240-hour policy has nationality, onward-ticket, port and permitted-area conditions.
Do not assume that a connecting ticket guarantees entry. Confirm your circumstances with the relevant immigration authority before relying on a city visit; the airline can clarify transit and baggage arrangements. Keep the plan optional until entry is authorised.
2. Calculate the time you can actually use
Use local Shenzhen times and check whether either flight falls on a different date. Work backwards from your next flight:
Include getting off the aircraft, immigration where applicable, customs, walking to transport, waiting and luggage collection. On return, allow for bag retrieval, check-in or bag drop, security, exit formalities where applicable and the walk to your gate.
Shenzhen Airlines recommends arriving three hours before international flights. That is airline guidance, not a universal connection rule. Confirm your operating airline's requirements for your flight. A check-in closing time is a deadline, not a sensible target for reaching the terminal.
3. Sort out bags and the return journey
Ask whether checked bags travel through to your destination or must be collected and checked in again. The airport lists paid, 24-hour luggage storage at the business centre in the fourth-floor departures hall, near Door 1 and the end of Check-in Island A. Confirm charges, restrictions and collection arrangements at the desk; include the detour in your budget.
Metro Line 11 is accessed through the airport's Ground Transportation Centre. Check service for both directions and your date with Shenzhen Metro. Include station walks and transfers, not just train time. For a taxi, account for road conditions. Set a firm city-departure time before leaving the airport.
4. Choose one manageable cluster
For a shopping-and-meal visit, consider Bao'an central district rather than crossing the city for several attractions. Uniwalk (壹方城), at 99 Xinhu Road, offers a single destination to browse and eat. The city's guide identifies Bao'an Center Station, Exit F; Line 11 serves Bao'an Station, a different station. Check the complete connection and walking route before choosing it.
This is an option to assess, not a pre-timed or guaranteed layover itinerary. Confirm shop hours and any specific cosmetics brand before travelling. Add a second stop only if the remaining margin genuinely allows it.
When staying at the airport makes sense
Stay at the airport if entry is not confirmed, delays consume your margin, transport or shop hours do not align, or leaving would mean watching the clock throughout. Rest and a meal can be the better use of a connection.

In the notes, flag that it is a layover and include your flight numbers, date, local arrival/departure times and baggage arrangement. The planner's day estimate is not a layover feasibility check. A route and host availability must be reviewed before payment; immigration permission remains separate.
